The third part of Horizon will definitely take place. This was confirmed by the game’s creative director Matijs de Jonge, who stated that Guerrilla Games is already thinking about how to continue the series after what happened in Horizon Forbidden West, Aloy’s second adventure, available on PS5 and PS4 on February 18, 2022.
In an interview (Spoilers will follow, so don’t read on if you haven’t finished the game yet.) de Jonge says that the ending of the second chapter leaves the door open for further development of the plot, and that his team already has plans for the next episode.
Horizon is all about mysteries and each of our stories revolves around solving puzzles from both the old world and the real world where the series takes place. Undoubtedly, there is a lot of backstory that we can take into account in order to develop new stories and create more mysteries around what we have already told. And in the end, Forbidden West ends with another big cliffhanger, with which we again lay the groundwork for the next game.
Considering that Horizon Zero Dawn has sold 20 million copies and Horizon Forbidden West is only at the beginning of its commercial ascent, the possible arrival of Horizon 3 can almost be taken for granted. However, at this point it is still too early to tell when development will begin and, more importantly, when it will debut on the market, possibly on PS5.
Either way, the franchise will move forward with Horizon Call of the Mountain announced for PlayStation VR2, though there’s no clear word yet on a launch date.
