Dad got money back after daughter spent $20,000 on Genshin Impact

Video games have found many ways to monetize beyond traditional sales. Genshin Impact uses a gacha model that is extremely popular among mobile games. Gacha games allow players to buy loot boxes that drop random content that can be anything from weapons to powerful characters.

In late 2021, Ling Cheng Mong discovered that he had $20,000 in delinquent credit card debt related to nearly a hundred unknown transactions. Apparently, his daughter spent all that money on Genshin Impact within six weeks. Mong managed to get half of the money back, but the bank has since refunded the full amount.

Gacha systems have always caused a lot of controversy in the gaming industry and while some players try to avoid them, others show support. Fans may have seen the term “whale” when talking about gacha games. Whales are users who spend a huge amount of money and they play an important role in the gacha game ecosystem, allowing them to constantly make a profit.

Luckily, even though Genshin Impact is considered a multiplayer game, the bulk of the community is focused on singleplayer. This means that spending heavily does not give an unfair advantage over other players, as users do not go head-to-head and compete with each other.

However, there are certain “traps” that can cause players to reach for a character to maximize their potential, spending both in-game currency and real money.
