Digital Foundry Tests Next-Gen Cyberpunk 2077 Update on PS5 or Xbox Series

©

Industry Technicians from Digital Foundry tested the long-awaited update of the new generation Cyberpunk 2077 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X | S.

On both PS5 and Xbox Series X, the ray-traced mode renders the scene on screen in dynamic 4K and, by upscaling from a native 1440p resolution, greatly improves the quality of ambient lighting in indoor locations. By choosing a graphics preset that prioritizes framerate to 60fps, Sony’s next-gen console delivers a smoother screen experience of around 5-10fps on average in the most intense gameplay scenes. However, the VRR support does a great job of masking any potential performance hit to the point where it’s not noticeable. Overall, regardless of the preferred next-gen console, the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of the “new” Night City turn out to be nearly identical.

Permission:

  • Series S 1296~1440p@30fps.
  • RT Mode PS5 / Series X ~1440p@30fps. As per Series S resolution, but only with RT.
  • Performance Mode: PS5 1260p to 1728p, Series X 1382p to 1782p
  • The Series X usually has a higher resolution, but TAA makes them look very similar.

Performance:

  • Both consoles work better than before. PS5 can have a 5~10 fps advantage in stress areas.
  • But VRR Series X support makes this not a problem.
  • Overall, DF considers the Series X performance improvement to be more significant compared to the pre-next-gen patch.
  • Outside of stressful situations, both consoles run at 60 frames per second.
  • Areas that used to load in around 40 seconds now load in 13 seconds on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles.
