Ever since Dune hit theaters and on HBO Max last October, fans have been dying to get a sequel from Denis Villeneuve, who directed this epic film. Luckily, it didn’t take long to find out that Dune Part Two was already in production, as the makers announced it just a week after the film’s North American debut.
Unfortunately, fans will have to wait until the end of 2023 for the next installment in the series. In order to somehow brighten up the expectation, Villeneuve recently spoke with Empire and provided additional information about the second film. In an interview, he spoke about the difficulties of filming the two-part film, some details about the Harkonnen, and his excitement about returning to the sands of Arrakis.
In the second film, I want to have more flexibility and be able to go into some of the details a bit. This includes the introduction of characters such as Fade-Rauta – as the focus of the story shifts to characters who played a smaller role last time. It’s like a chess game. Some new characters will appear in the second part, and I decided very early on that the first part would be more about Paul Atreides and the Bene Gesserit and his first contact with another culture. There’s going to be a lot more Harkonnen stuff in part two. I just want to experience it, be there for it, in every moment. When I make a film, I make it like all my films, as if it were my last. I will do the same with the second part.
Dune: Part Two is released on October 20, 2023.
