God of War Ragnarok devs hire staff for ‘New Large Scale Project’

In a recent job listing for Sony Santa Monica, the studio confirmed that a new project is already in the works. A new art director is needed who is brought in to help develop a brand new unannounced project.

On several occasions, the art director’s job profile mentions “new unannounced title”, “new journey”, and “new large-scale project” at Sony Santa Monica. Obviously, the wording is extremely vague as to what the project might be, but the important thing is that it is new and has not yet been confirmed publicly. As for other details about the project, all the profile says is that Santa Monica Studio makes “genre-defining games” and that this position will help establish style guides for “environments, characters, and creatures.”

What will happen next with Sony Santa Monica, from a general point of view, remains a mystery. Sony Santa Monica has been the studio behind God of War for the PlayStation since the original game’s release in 2005, so it’s hard to imagine they’re working on anything else. However, God of War Ragnarok director Eric Williams ends the Norse saga with God of War Ragnarok.

One possibility is the next project from God of War director Cory Barlog. In 2021, Barlog confirmed that he would not be directing God of War Ragnarok, due in part to Sony Santa Monica’s tradition of changing directors between games. However, Barlog is still at Sony Santa Monica and has hinted at a different game. Perhaps he was building a team while also working as a producer on God of War Ragnarok, and now he needs an art director.
