Good news: The creators of the original Futurama animated series have begun production on the new season

Hulu ordered 20 new episodes of Futurama, the science comedy series originally created by David X. Cohen and Matt Groening. Both creators are returning for a revival of the series, as are members of the original cast, but John DiMaggio, the iconic voice of Bender, as well as several other supporting characters, have not been confirmed for the project at this time. The report says the producers are still hoping to get DiMaggio, who is currently part of the voice-over role for Groening’s fantasy comedy Disillusionment on Netflix, on board, but if that doesn’t happen, the role will be recast.

Production on new episodes of Futurama will begin in March. Hulu hopes the series will return in 2023.

Matt Groening stated the following:

I’m thrilled to have another chance to think about the future…or anything but the present. I am honored to announce the triumphant return of Futurama once again before we are abruptly canceled again.

Head of Animation Marcy Proitto:

What I love about animation is the ability for a successful show to take a break and then pick it up years later, even on a different platform, and pick up where it left off. Futurama is one such show. Hulu’s excitement to bring back Matt and David’s genius for new episodes is overwhelming. I’m thrilled that this incredible team will be able to tell more stories and the Planet Express crew will have more adventures. This is a win for fans who have loved the show from the start and for those who are discovering it for the first time./
