It might have seemed like an unusual idea at first, but Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle has proven to be a critical and commercial success. Ubisoft’s game is now the best-selling non-Nintendo Nintendo Switch game according to NPD Group and Chart-Track GFK, as well as Eurogamer.
While Nintendo games like The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and Splatoon 2 continued to dominate the sales charts, other third-party games like Super Bomberman R sold well. However, Mario + Rabbids has already topped the list since its release in late August. Eurogamer also reports that Nintendo has picked up the game for publication in Japan and South Korea.
Back in early September, sales data from Australia and New Zealand showed that Mario + Rabbids was the top-selling game across all platforms in two countries during launch week. The game became the second most purchased across all platforms in the same week in the UK.
Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle is a strategy game rooted in turn-based XCOM-style combat. You choose a squad of characters (including the core Super Mario products and Ubisoft’s puppet versions of Rabbids) and fight a bunch of enemy Rabbids. It also features a local co-op mode in which you team up with a friend and each of them controls a two-man squad.
The game was a critical favorite. The continuation of the game was finally confirmed at E3 2021. Mario + Rabbids: Sparks Of Hope comes out in 2022 with characters like Mario, Luigi, Princess Peach, Rabbid Peach, Rabbid Luigi and more.
