Company co-founder Atsushi Inaba, who recently took over as president and CEO, suggested in an interview that the company will focus more on game-services. He said he would like the company to create more games that “can be enjoyed and loved over a long period of time” as opposed to “disposable, well-designed” games like Bayonetta.
And Kamiya’s Project GG was mentioned by Inaba in connection with his desire to create games “that are different from the past”. “Whoops, I almost blew the whistle about where we’re going,” Inaba hinted when asked about the design philosophy behind GG.
The GG project is still in the testing phase for various things, so I can’t tell you much about it, but when it comes to the future of game production, we want to focus on making games that are different from the past. I would like to focus on making games that can be enjoyed and loved for a long period of time. Of course, we would like to nurture and create small but brilliantly conceived games like Sol Cresta and games where you can enjoy the process of playing through single, well-designed stages like Bayonetta. However, the projects we are trying to create in the future will differ in their structure. Given the changes in the market over the next five years or so, I believe this is absolutely essential for us. Sorry to be so vague, but I think that’s all I can tell you right now.
After more than a decade of employment, Project GG is PlatinumGames’ first own franchise. It is a hero action game that is described as the “climax” of director Hideki Kamiya’s superhero trilogy, following Viewtiful Joe and The Wonderful 101. Inaba, who was previously PlatinumGames’ vice president and chief producer of its development division, took over as president and CEO last month. Hideki Kamiya, renowned designer for Devil May Cry and Bayonetta, became Vice President.
I would like to return to our raison d’être and create new games on a large scale. In the past, even if we wanted to create something: our own, it was difficult to do it, and if we did it on a very small scale … we could only do indie products. In the future, I would like to get rid of all this and make bigger games based on our ideas.
Currently PlatinumGames develops a number of projects, the most notable of which is Bayonetta 3. The company is also developing a role-playing game Babylon’s Fall for Square Enixwhich should be released in March of this year, as well as Sol Cresta is a sequel to the 1980 arcade game Moon Cresta and its 1985 successor Terra Cresta.
