Starfield lead artist Istvan Peli:

At the very beginning of the project, when we were trying to define the overall aesthetic of the game, we coined the term “NASA punk” to describe a sci-fi universe that is a bit more down to earth and understandable. We wanted to make a very realistic approach. You can draw a line from today’s space technology and extrapolate it into the future to make it believable and believable.

Lead Animator Rick Vicens added

What’s really interesting is how much we’ve all latched on to this concept. When you said “NASA punk”, the art team immediately took those two words and made them work. It was just the perfect term for our art direction and for keeping everyone in the same flow and working in the same style. For me it just clicked. At the beginning of the project, I think this term was decisive for us.
