New study on video game character earnings accidentally finds policemen are overpaid

A recent study of how much money various video game characters make in the real world revealed that police officers are actually some of the highest paid people in our society. The fact that cops feature so prominently in the study should come as no surprise to anyone even remotely familiar with video game characters.

The study was conducted by a gaming platform called Solitaired. The methodology used by the company included a study of the average wages earned by people in various occupations. “Information about video game characters was used to determine each character’s profession,” the study says. “The average values for each salary were taken from the Salary Expert, Indeed, or Federal Pay comparison tool and then ranked from highest to lowest.”

The study in question “looked at some of the world’s most iconic video game characters and calculated how much each of them would earn if they got their real-life dream job.” This included generating “character incomes from data from salary comparison sites, as well as public salary ranges to find the average annual salary for over 50 video game characters.”

According to research, the top 10 earnings are Borderlands 2’s Handsome Jack, the CEO earning $432,524, followed by Metal Gear Solid’s Solid Snake, Resident Evil’s Albert Wesker, Call of Duty’s Alex Mason, Max Payne Payne, Cole Phelps from LA Noire, Gordon Freeman from Half-Life, Arthur Morgan from Red Dead Redemption 2, Mortimer Goth from The Sims and Isaac Clarke from Dead Space. It’s worth noting that half of these video game characters are either real cops or someone very similar.

Virologist Albert Wesker would earn only slightly more ($117,557) than Detective Max Payne ($98,600). “After receiving a doctorate in virology at age 17, Wesker initially began his training at Umbrella Pharmaceuticals before being transferred to Arclay’s lab as a senior scientist working on the T-virus project following the dissolution of his training school.” Max Payne, on the other hand, “began his police career in the 1990s, working for the New York City Police Department as a detective before joining DEA colleague Alex Balder in the Valkyrie drug case after brutal murder of his wife and daughter in 1998”.

Not surprisingly, the lowest paid retail and service workers are a fact that says a lot about our society. These include Assassin’s Creed’s Desmond Miles, a bartender earning $27,802, and Ryu from Street Fighter, a martial arts instructor earning $28,212. “Desmond, who is the descendant of a long line of Assassins, used his training to hitchhike to New York City, where he worked as a bartender at Bad Weather, before ultimately being captured,” the study explains. When it comes to Ryu, the character “first appeared in Capcom’s original Street Fighter game in 1987, and while his name roughly translates to ‘wealthy’ in Japanese, the same cannot be said for his expected salary.”

At the end of the list were several highly qualified positions. For example, in a study, Tomb Raider’s Lara Croft ranked “twenty-seventh with a salary of $54,690 while working as a British archaeologist”.
