Nvidia admits internal network hacking and data theft

Last week it was reported that NVIDIA was the victim of a cyberattack. An unknown group was able to gain access to NVIDIA’s internal systems and was allegedly able to steal some data. The LOPSUS$ hacker group claimed responsibility for this hack and confirmed that they were able to extract up to 1TB of data.

The following days became more or less confirmation that this incident was more serious than previously thought. A group of hackers have confirmed that they now have blueprints for the NVIDIA Lite Hash Rate algorithm, a special code that is responsible for limiting the hash rate of the GeForce RTX 30 video card cryptocurrency. This group is now actively selling a workaround for LHR.

So far, NVIDIA has not acknowledged that it has been hacked, but that has changed today as NVIDIA released a new statement:

“On February 23, 2022, NVIDIA became aware of a cybersecurity incident that affected IT resources. Shortly after the discovery of the incident, we further strengthened our network, engaged cybersecurity incident response experts, and notified law enforcement.
We have no evidence that the ransomware is deployed in the NVIDIA environment or that it is related to the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. However, we are aware that an attacker took employees’ credentials and some confidential NVIDIA information from our systems and began leaking it to the network. Our team is working on analyzing this information. We do not anticipate any disruption to our business or our ability to serve our customers as a result of the incident.
Security is an ongoing process that we take very seriously at NVIDIA, and we invest daily in the security and quality of our code and products.”

Yesterday, the group that managed to compromise NVIDIA’s servers began sharing files downloaded from the company’s servers. This led to the disclosure of the first information about NVIDIA’s future architecture.
