The next generation NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4080/4090 GPUs will fall behind the AMD Radeon RX 7800 XT/7900 XT when they both launch later this year. This was shared by Tom (MLID) in his latest video on the status of RDNA 3 and Lovelace GPUs. According to his source, the best thing NVIDIA can currently do with Ada is 60-80% faster than existing parts of Ampere. While this is no laughing matter, it’s still a notch below the AMD-powered Radeon RX 7800 XT and RX 7900 XT.
There are several RDNA 3 performance rumors floating around the web, with some even claiming a 3x performance improvement over the RX 6900 XT. Personally, I find this extremely unlikely (even impossible).
Finally, regarding the power consumption of high performance Ada GPUs. NVIDIA is reportedly looking to increase the TBP of their next generation cards to make sure they keep up with AMD’s chipsets.
The start of sales of the GeForce RTX 4000 and Radeon RX 7000 is scheduled for the end of 2022.
