Star Wars Jedi: Survivor Director Reveals Key Benefits of Developing on Current-Gen Consoles

In an interview published shortly after the announcement of Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, Asmussen said that ray tracing is one of the most important improvements made possible by next-generation hardware. The director also talked about a lighting system that is “far superior” to anything we’ve seen from the studio before.

“I think the most important thing is ray tracing, or lighting,” Asmussen said. “This allows us to make real-time lighting with an accuracy that is far beyond anything we’ve ever done before. Because it’s real-time, we instantly see changes when we set up the light. This means we have more time to polish, which means we can replicate more and get better results that feel more cinematic.”

It’s not entirely clear what Asmussen meant by “cinematic,” but it’s nice to hear that the sequel is such a big visual step up from its already pretty good-looking predecessor.

Finally, Asmussen mentions the PS5’s DualSense controller as another unique way to improve Star Wars Jedi: Survivor over Fallen Order, though he doesn’t go into detail. “There are some really cool tactile effects in the PlayStation 5 controller that we’re currently looking into,” he said.

Star Wars Jedi: Survivor will hit the market in 2023.
