Xbox creator almost fired after he said gaming was like masturbating

Back in 2001, Seamus Blackley, one of the key creators of the original Xbox console, compared gaming to masturbation. Apparently, this did not please Bill Gates and other senior Microsoft executives. According to Blakely, he almost got fired for it.

Recently on Twitter, someone pointed to a quote from Bloomberg journalist Dinah Bass that said, “Games are like masturbation. Everyone does it, no one wants to talk about it.” She responded to the man on Twitter and explained that she has to give credit to Seamus Blackie, often referred to as the father of Xbox, who originally said this quote back in 2001. In response to this tweet, Blackley explained that he almost got fired for it.

In 2001, Blackley gave an interview a few weeks before the launch of the Xbox. And in an interview, he delivered the infamous quote: “Games are like masturbation. Everyone does it, no one wants to talk about it.”

Blackley explained that the main reason he got into such trouble was because the quote ended up in the East Side Journal. “And some conservative executive spouses [Microsoft] read it,” Blakley says, “and they called me to, let’s say, building 4.”

Of course, Blackley wasn’t fired and helped Microsoft successfully launch the original Xbox, and while that initial console didn’t perform as well as the PS2, later Xbox consoles were far more successful. Now Microsoft’s Xbox division is so big it’s buying up companies the size of Activision and Bethesda.
