Many people fell in love with the first part of Pillars of Eternity, so the general love for this game did not pass me by either. The success of the first part is not a strange phenomenon: the story in it is self-sufficient and clearly needs a sequel. A fascinating RPG ended with the tyrant-inquisitor named Taos being defeated, the world of Eora was saved, although, to be honest, many residents did not understand what was really going on and what a “tangle” of conspiracies, secrets and intrigues had formed.
The developers from the California studio Obsidian Entertainment perfectly understood that the game they had created should definitely have a sequel, so they played out a kind of multi-move: they gave all the fans a little respite in the form of hardcore Tyranny, after which they got to the crowdfunding platform “Fig” with the sequel for Pillars of Eternity. which is analogous to “Kikstarter”.
By talent and success
► “In Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, not only the size of the locations will grow, but also their detail. Already, based on the experience in the first part, we can definitely say that thanks to the scale and detail, it will be easier to create breathtaking landscapes.
The long-awaited sequel was called Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, and the fundraising campaign on the Fig service was not only crowned with success, the second part turned out to be the most generously funded project in the entire history of this service. If you go into details, the authors collected 4.7 million dollars for the development, and this despite the fact that 1.1 million dollars was enough to create the game. If we compare the second part with the first, then it is worth recalling that at that time fundraising for development was stuck at $ 3.9 million. Based on this, it turns out that Obsidian Entertainment has set its own new record.
Moreover, of all the goals set, the developers failed to fulfill only two: first, to realize sea monsters, fishing and other marine parts; the second is to add an eighth companion. And even if this did not appear in the game, there is enough entertainment in Pillars of Eternity for every taste.

As for the second part, it was most logical to expect from Obsidian Entertainment not a direct continuation of the first part, but a branch, as was done in the role-playing game Torment: Tides of Numenera, which became the spiritual successor of the classic version – Planescape: Torment. Nevertheless, to the delight of all fans, the authors are creating a sequel in which not only new characters will play key roles, but also the old ones already familiar to everyone. So, for example, in Deadfire will appear the elven sorcerer Alot, the attractive blond Eder and the feathered paladin Pallejina. This time, the heroes will have a new, no less serious task – to defeat the revived titan and the angry god Eotas, whose temple ruins can be studied in the first part. Titan, in turn, despite the information presented in the first part, has its own secrets and raises a huge pile of questions.

Fans and simply attentive players will surely remember the god named “Eotas”, because in Pillars of Eternity a whole interesting, eerie and sometimes intense quest is dedicated to him. Plus, there are several religious books that talk in more detail about the belief in the deceased god.
In Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, this good (it turned out only from books!) God of light and rebirth has risen. And any god needs a body, so in this case, Eotas chose a colossal statue that was buried underground long ago. The revived giant, of course, destroys the fortress of the protagonist and mortally wounds him. The revived god then travels to the Deadfire (aka “Deadfire”) archipelago, after which a group of volunteer adventurers sets off in pursuit to stop the enraged god.
This time, an exciting adventure, as you might have guessed, unfolds on the “Dead Fire” archipelago, which consists of hundreds of islands of various sizes and climates. So the heroes will have to visit both the tropical jungle and hot deserts. As before, the size of the “party” will be limited to six characters, one of which will be the main character, created at the very beginning of the game. And since a lot of time has passed, and different events in the first part, three old acquaintances have noticeably grown old.

The old heroes will be accompanied by four new heroes. The first should be the pathfinder Maya Rua with her faithful bird of prey. The second hero will be a rather non-standard, but very colorful gnome-pirate Serafen with clairvoyant skills (by the way, which helped him to become seriously rich). The third will be the bard-submariner Tekehyu. The fourth hero is Ksoti, a healer and part-time nun in one person, giving life with his left hand, and taking it away with his right.
Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire will not do without companion assistants. There will be four of them, each of them will have its own entertaining biography, unique skills and peculiar character. Of course, they have not grown to party skirmishes and the full-fledged title of “companion”, but they can still be taken to the team. The secondary companions in Deadfire will be more detailed. However, this is the main difference from the nameless characters from the first part. And you can still recruit them in any tavern.
In the studio Obsidian Entertainment was going to turn a gothic elf named Idwin into a full-fledged hero, but the money raised for “Fig” was not enough, so it was decided to limit itself to seven unique heroes and four companions-assistants. Of course, this is not taking into account the fact that the game has the ability to create your own unique hero with any class, race and appearance.

New world – new rules
The game’s lead designer, Josh Sawyer, has worked not only on Pillars of Eternity, but also on Icewind Dale 2, Fallout: New Vega and Alpha Protocol. All these games are well known to many and, moreover, they are loved. My point is that the credibility of Mr. Josh Sawyer is high. And given that the developer has promised, they say, the sequel will become more friendly to casual players, in contrast to the high threshold for the entry of the first part, then we can say with confidence that it will be so. However, this does not mean at all that the authors will ignore all the details of old-school isometric RPGs.
All important plot decisions (and there are quite a few of them), killed and pardoned characters, deceived investors and many more – everything will be available for transfer to the second part. And this means that it is not too late to go through the first part and save the saved passage. At the moment, it is known that Deadfire is going to be released in the first quarter of 2018, although given the full scale of the project, there may be news that the release date has been postponed.

The sequel will delight with new types of surfaces. So, for example, in soft sand, the characters will barely move. In addition, the role of familiar materials, for example, water, will increase. There is so much of it on the archipelago that the authors decided to introduce sea travel and even worked on the physics of models of the bodies of drowned people. Therefore, it is quite obvious that the heroes will have to travel a lot between the islands, and on the way there will certainly be a variety of troubles.
It is also interesting that for the first time since Fallout: New Vegas, developers are going to implement a decent simulation of life. This means that even the most seedy NPC will have their own daily routine, following which they will have to visit several very different places. That is, the simulation will not be at the level of the Gothic series of games, where the characters, roughly speaking, had two basic concepts: work and rest. In Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire, this means that the characters will have a wide range of activities in different locations. This approach to the game will add complexity to the tasks, so finding the right character will be a real challenge.
Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire is undoubtedly an example of a sequel that has been done right. Obsidian Entertainment has become famous for being responsible, understanding and knowledgeable people, so it is not surprising that they have taken into account the shortcomings of past games. And thanks to experiments with new game mechanics in the game Tyranny, all the best developments will be carried over to the second part of Pillars of Eternity.
The authors have every chance to create a truly excellent isometric RPG that will not only fulfill the dreams of many fans, but will advance the whole genre further. In addition, the money raised will definitely be enough for them for development, so the main thing is that they are not let down by their ambitions.
