Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus Preview

Already on November 15, we are expecting the release of yet another turn-based strategy game based on the famous Warhammer 40,000 universe called Mechanicus. At the gamescom 2018 gaming exhibition, developers from the French company Bulwark Studios told a lot about the upcoming game, and also demonstrated an alpha version. At the moment, quite a lot is known about the game, and there is nothing left before the release, so you can already form an opinion about the new project. What is the future of the new Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus and will the developers be able to please both fans of the series and ordinary gamers who have not heard anything about the world of Warhammer? Let’s look at all aspects of the game and try to figure it out.

Game Developers

The creators of the new Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus are Bulwark Studios. In addition to the aforementioned game, these developers have only one project that was released in 2014 – Crowntakers. This game is a turn-based strategy game set in a fictional fantasy world. The game turned out to be quite good both in terms of the visual part (original cartoon style) and in terms of the gameplay. The presence of a good turn-based strategy among the projects created and the desire to create a good game definitely gives faith in the creators of a new game in the Warhammer universe.

In Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus, the player will lead a special faction of the Adeptus Mechanicus, which is an ancient cult. If you describe them in simple terms, then they are some kind of tech-priests. These minions of the God-Emperor are very good at technique, they are even partially that technique. Representatives of the cult are in command of an expedition to the mysterious planet Silva Tenebris, during the journey to which they will have to endure many difficult battles, dangerous research, as well as the opportunity to learn the secrets of the past and gain access to forgotten technologies.

The developers promise to make the tasks in the game interesting and exciting. They will all start the same: at the start of the mission, a ship with a crew of four is landed at the location. In each mission we will take part in many battles, of which in one task there can be from five to ten. If one of your team dies in battle, then there is no need to despair, you can again play for this hero after two missions. You definitely won’t have to replay the mission here.

Game process

Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus is a turn-based strategy game with all the ensuing consequences. Many battles await us, and each time they will take place in new locations. Judging by several trailers of the game, the maps are quite diverse. It can be seen that the developers from Bulwark Studios spent a lot of time and effort to ensure that the game world was diverse and the players did not get bored in the same type of locations during the next battle.

Among the game mechanics, a rather interesting scale of points should be highlighted: they make it possible to advance on the map much further than is possible thanks to turn points, destroy an enemy terminal, use weapons of mass destruction, and this is not the whole list of possibilities to implement this scale.

On the planet being explored, the tech-priests faction will have to face all sorts of barriers and incidents during their exploration. The outcome of such events can be either positive for the faction or negative. And it may be completely perceived ambiguously. Let’s give an ordinary example: a squad has the ability to scan enemies to identify their vulnerabilities, but at the same time, this very scan attracts new opponents. Nevertheless, in any case, you will be able to get the cherished experience. The difficulty of the missions will increase as you progress and progress towards the final task, but a series of actions (interaction with the desired object or the already mentioned scanning of enemies) makes it possible to simplify a number of tasks and make them easier to complete.

How to be for beginners?

Even if you have never heard anything about the Warhammer universe, you should not worry at all and think that everything in the game will be difficult and incomprehensible for you. Bulwark Studios has taken care of the newcomers as well, so the new game is being created not only for ardent Hammer of War fans. The storyline will flow smoothly and will be able to tell the player well about the key characters and events of the new game. At this stage, the plot looks interesting, and the small dialogues of the characters before the start of the next task only add interest to the passage.

There are two key heroes in Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus. General Weidex, completely devoted to the God-Emperor and General of Scawall, who, unlike his comrade-in-arms, does not have such a radical stance. Scawalla is a kind of cyborg, in which many parts of the body have already become mechanical, and therefore, it looks more like a machine than a living person. This aspect is also clearly visible in the manner of communication of this lady: when, during the letter, Wydex writes with the words “equal”, Scavalla puts a mathematical equal sign. These minor details emphasize the character of the characters well, and in their speech and positions, you can clearly see the difference in worldview.

A little more about the gameplay

But Scavalla is not alone in using mechanical elements in her body. You can install certain mechanical parts for each unit, of which there can be up to 13 pieces in each of the fighters. These can be implants or some kind of weapon instead of ordinary hands. All these elements can be improved or painted in the future to suit the style of the characters, so that you will have the opportunity to choose the style of passage yourself. Also, the tech-priests faction can defend against two types of damage taken: normal damage and energy damage.

Depending on which hero you choose to complete the tasks (there will be about 50 heroes in the game), the outcome in the game will depend. In Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus, there are four completely different endings, and what you see will depend on a number of key aspects of the game: what hero you completed the missions, the order of passing these very missions, the choice made in the process of passing in this or that moment of the game etc. In addition, the game has a special timer that is filled with each completed task in the game. After the end of the countdown, a huge and aggressive boss appears and you must fight with him or shamefully escape from the battle. After this event, the countdown begins again, but a number of tasks will no longer be available for passing. It is worth noting that although there is a choice of tasks and their passage, there will still be a number of restrictions, but they are not so significant and are unlikely to spoil the experience of the game.

What are we being promised?

In the new Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus, there should be a lot of things that the developers promise. The developers have repeatedly talked about the atmospheric soundtrack and high-quality voice acting for all the characters. We hope that they will keep their promises and will not let the fans down, because the game will be on sale in almost a week – on November 15.

If we consider only the alpha version of Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus, then it looks quite interesting and not bad. Obviously, the French developers were very attentive to the project and paid attention to almost every game element. If the game is brought to mind and everything is implemented correctly, then fans of Warhammer 40,000 will be able to get another good strategy for their favorite world, but other players will be able to easily get acquainted with this very fictional universe and, perhaps, eventually also become fans of the world Warhammer 40,000.

The potential of the project is really great. The game is created based on the well-known universe, which has a large audience of fans, and the developers themselves can see that they do not treat the project as a way to make money on a well-known brand, but are scrupulously working on the game, improving even the smallest details and components of Mechanicus. The plot of the game is not bad, the setting is also good, and the gameplay also looks interesting and exciting. If the game also has good voice acting, and the locations and missions really differ in variety, then we will have a good game that will appeal to both loyal fans and ordinary gamers. Find out what Warhammer 40,000: Mechanicus really is, it will be possible very soon – November 15. So we are reviewing the published trailers and screenshots and awaiting the release.
