If you are one of those people who believe that a person who recently launched another person into space has lost everything today, then I suggest remembering Greece. Ancient Greece is one of the greatest human civilizations. It is impossible to count how much she eventually gave to this world: writing, architecture, medicine, mythology, philosophy. And how many great people? Socrates is history. Herodotus is a science. Archimedes, Pythagoras – music, army, politics. Today, Greece is far from what it used to be. The capital of Greece (Athens) does not reflect the greatness that it was before. Moreover, scientists have proved that the current Greeks are direct descendants and heirs of those same Greeks. Not without Turkish and other crossbreeds, of course, but nevertheless. Today, you can’t call Greece what it used to be. Absolutely the same applies to Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey – the game has no right to be called Assassin’s Creed. Because both of these examples have nothing to do with their past, but more on that in a moment.
Many really and genuinely love this franchise. And I truly believe that if you love something like that, you have every right to criticize it. Again, I’ll go from afar: what kind of upbringing produces the most ill-mannered children? With complete freedom, when they are not punished for anything, praised for everything and in general, whatever the child does, he is loved and cherished for everything? Or with strict upbringing, when a child commits a serious offense and a fully justified, fair punishment follows? Of course, in the case of the first option. And with games, exactly the same situation is happening now. Therefore, from time to time, video game developers should be scolded and given a “hat”. Especially when it comes to Ubisoft or Electronic Arts – just giant companies with an incredible amount of money. In general, they will not be impoverished by adequate and normal criticism.
Odyssey – a new round of development of the series
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. Reviews
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is an insanely controversial and extremely controversial project. However, in recent times, Odyssey is the most balanced game in the entire Assassin’s Creed franchise. Immediately it is worth recognizing that from the very beginning to the end of the Prologue, the passage of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is as difficult as possible and it is directly annoying. After the end of the Prologue (after about 2.5 hours), the gameplay of the game seems to open its wings. And it’s at this point that the game becomes really interesting, then the question arises, where does Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey on Metacritic get such ratings, if it’s so incredibly interesting? The answer is simple: because it’s no longer Assassin’s Creed, so the fan community is rightly angry. Odyssey no longer has anything in common with the franchise. The lion’s share of canonical attributes is literally thrown away. All the usual elements like blades, hoods, the ideas of the Brotherhood, the unchanging history of the ancestors – all this is now forgotten.
Ubisoft has a brand – it’s Assassin’s Creed. And they successfully “milk” it, releasing a completely different game under this auspices. Yeah, a good game. Yes, high-quality. Yeah, interesting. However, not the game whose name it bears. To explain more clearly: if you had not been told the name of this game, you would never have guessed that this is the same Assassin’s Creed. That’s how different things are in this game than you could see before.
There are two options as to why things happen the way they do. The first is that Ubisoft is a creative crisis and they have no idea how to further develop the very concept of the Brotherhood. They come up with some ridiculous excuses like “the ancestor’s DNA is damaged, so players can change the history of the ancestor”, thereby giving themselves a real carte blanche to enter the dialogue systems, which completely contradicts the very concept of Assassin’s Creed. You can choose a character: I’m sure that in subsequent parts of the DNA will be so damaged that you can choose the appearance of the character, you can choose his gender, race, sexual orientation. Why not? The DNA is damaged. The ancestor of the transgender is really something new from Ubisoft.
The second option is the concept itself. After all, if you look, the concept of assassins has literally already exhausted itself and has become a kind of “narrow neck”. It is possible that the very idea of the Brotherhood is just ballast, because of which the game in terms of gameplay is greatly limited. In this case, Ubisoft should abandon the name Assassin’s Creed, but from a marketing point of view, this is simply impossible. Too much effort, time and money is invested in this name to just take it and bury it. Therefore, it is difficult to judge and evaluate Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey – it is incredibly multifaceted, ambiguous and far from what could be seen earlier in the series.
Plot, historical figures, decisions
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. Review
Finally, the developers gave at least some interesting story, which can be remembered in at least six months. However, that doesn’t mean that in terms of the storyline, Odyssey is a terrific game. The plot is quite mediocre and ordinary, but its key advantage is that it regularly arouses all sorts of interest.
The protagonist is a mercenary, without honor and conscience, only with a sparkle of benefit in his eyes. He doesn’t care who he fights for: Sparta or Athens. The main thing is that they give money. The protagonist (or heroine) is the heir of Tsar Leonid himself. According to the plot, the character needs to solve his certain family problems. I will not say exactly what problems, so as not to spoil anything, but the main thing is that there are dramatic and unexpected moments in the game. And it’s amazing. I don’t want to inflate expectations, because the story as a whole is trivial. Still, it’s at least a little interesting. If you compare “Odyssey” with the previous parts – the game makes a good plot step forward.
The game drags you into the thick of political events. It is interesting that famous historical figures are woven into the plot. For example, Herodotus, Socrates, Pericles, Demosthenes and many other equally famous characters appear. Finally, Ubisoft is not just transferred to a local story, but transferred so that there is a kind of symbiosis: the personal history of the hero is concisely and smoothly intertwined with the global history of Ancient Greece. Yes, historical figures were present in both Assassin’s Creed: Unity and Assassin’s Creed: Syndicate. However, they were present there only in fragments. And in The Odyssey, they’re connected to the main storyline and it happens often.
The events of the storyline develop during the Peloponnesian War. So you will learn about the conflict parties, what happened, why, which of the parties is right and who is not and much more. The development of the storyline is influenced by the answers in the dialogue system. Expect the level of interactive cinema from Quantic Dream is not worth it, but still the consequences of the decisions are still there. And for a start, they look good, because after all, Ubisoft has this first experience.
And yes, the dialogue system in Odyssey is not canon of the Assassin’s Creed series. After all, the game is based on the history of the ancestor and here the history of the ancestor can be changed. Yes, it’s absolutely not canon, but it’s still interesting. It’s interesting to influence the game with your answers. Model the storyline the way you want. If you understand this, then you will agree that the very idea of Assassin’s Creed is a “bottleneck”. And there’s not much else in this game that’s interesting, but it’s not because it’s not going to be canon. Thus, there is an insanely complex dilemma that Ubisoft has created: on the one hand, lore, history and all this idea of brotherhood, but on the other hand quite interesting gameplay.
A Call of Adventure
Assassin’s Creed Review: Odyssey
Many argue that “Odyssey” is a calque of Assassin’s Creed: Origins, although this is far from the case. In terms of the interface, the game is really similar to Origins, but the way Odyssey is played, the way the game looks, the way it feels is definitely a different game. And by the way, everything is far from being in the good sense of these words.
In any case, it is wrong to demand radical changes after the game, which was released a year ago. All the more, let’s be honest in the sense that “Origins”, if you compare it with past games in the Assassin’s Creed series, was a project with a thick touch of innovation. First, Assassin’s Creed: Origins was really gigantic, and Odyssey was even bigger. The map is just huge. It’s incredibly gigantic. It’s huge. Another thing is that the setting itself is not too much replete with any large architectural structures, dense populated cities. In this regard, it is quite easy to create a scale, because most of the territory is still occupied by seas and mountains. And the mountains and the sea are not so difficult to recreate. Like, for example, the same Paris from Assassin’s Creed: Unity. Nevertheless, the scale of the world is felt. And because of the beautifully designed logistics, boats, horses, ships and fast travel, after all.
The gameplay does not tire you in any way – it is still interesting to play. And the sea is not just water, where you swim from island to island. The sea and all the related details are a full-fledged part of the game. Sea battles, sea hunting, pumping the ship, pumping the crew, customization of the vessel itself. In short, the developers simply took Assassin’s Creed: Black Flag and literally integrated this game into the Odyssey. There is also content in the sea: tasks, chests, living creatures (fish, dolphins, sharks). It’s all really cool. By the way, the game has just an amazing quality of water graphics. She’s incredibly real. One would assume that this is thanks to “NVidia Wave Works”, but this is not so, because on consoles this can not be.
Of course, sometimes everything is not so rosy, because sometimes you have to swim for a long time, and this is a boring process. All the boredom of the Aegean Sea in this cannot be avoided. By the way, the real map of Greece from a gaming point of view is not exactly similar, but still there are certain similarities. For the completeness of the atmosphere, a compass is very much missing, so that the game does not indicate to you where to sail, where the treasure is located and everything like that.
In general, Assassin’s Creed has a very long-standing problem, which migrated to Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, which is associated with the search for some locations, characters, valuable resources, hunting. The problem is that it’s all highlighted. It feels like the franchise has a built-in “Google Maps”, so the player goes from one destination to another. And that’s not a good thing. If you disable the interface of the game, then there is an atmosphere, a deeper immersion in the gameplay, but then you will not be able to find something. The game does not give any clues, useful NPCs or other items on which there would be useful coordinates of any task or character. The game just puts a point on the map, so you need to go there and fulfill the specified requirements. And yet Ubisoft is moving in that direction.
A new mode called “Explore” has been added, where the highlighting of tasks, resources and other things is less. Nevertheless, at the disposal will still be an equilibrium bird, which at a bird’s eye view is able to illuminate everything that is at the bottom of the ocean. This is wrong. The developers at Ubisoft should have made a truly exploratory game. They will easily succeed, because today the concept of the game is a continuous running: you need to run to where the game indicates to you, getting experience for it later, simultaneously collecting everything that you can collect.
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey seems to belong to the RPG genre, but there is no crafting. The game lacks any global goal, challenge. You just have to drag your “carcass” from one point to another point where the game points. In general, this is not entirely correct.
Combat system, stealth and pumping
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. Review
Origins had a mediocre combat system, but it was obviously the best of all the last installments in the series. In Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey, you can watch the same thing, but still it’s a little better. Still, yes, it’s still mediocre, it’s clumsy, it’s slow, it’s not particularly spectacular, but it’s still better. The game does not stand still. However, you will agree that this is a dubious justification for a game about killers, where murders and a combat system are the cornerstone of the entire system. And in this game, the combat system must be flawless. And in practice, she is, frankly, weak, while playing in 2018.
Why are there still no interesting combinations of blows in the game? Why are there no tackles, rolls, throws, feints, the use of any surrounding objects. By the way, this was in some games of the Assassin’s Creed series, but were safely removed. It would be cool if you could grab an opponent and hit him against a tree, for example. Or during the battle to throw at the enemy some objects: a pot, a log, an axe or a sword that sealed the enemy to some wall. There are just a lot of ideas.
In Spider-Man (2018), every fight is an incredible sandbox. Each fight was really unique and in no way like another fight. For that in a game about a murderer and murder, every fight is the same type of fight. Roll, stab in the back, and then roll again and stab in the back. Absolutely the same scenario for each battle. The complaint about Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey in 2018 is this: Why is the combat system still so disgusting and terrible? Where is the spectacle? Again, comparing the game with Spider-Man (2018), because this is the most “recent” example, where there were acrobatic tricks, incredibly beautiful rolls, all sorts of slowmo moments. Of the above in the Odyssey, there are only wretched slow moments and everything in principle. The Combat System of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey evokes absolutely no sense of delight, admiration or wide-open eyes from what is happening. What’s surprising is that this showiness in question was a bit even in Assassin’s Creed 3. Since that time, it is not that there is no progress – there has been constant degradation.
The combat system of Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is absolutely incomprehensible: every time you have to fight absolutely the same way as you fought before. It’s all stupidly the same. But this game is about a killer. It should contain incredible acrobatic tricks. Complex combat combinations are necessary, but in the case of the Odyssey, at least the usual combinations of blows were enough. There must be an interaction with the environment. Stylish techniques, hand-to-hand combat. God, there’s no hand-to-hand combat in Assassin’s Creed. There is no hand-to-hand combat in the killer game.
The next complaint about the game: What happened to the stealth murders in Odyssey? In the old parts, the hidden murders were spectacular and spectacular. Now it’s not clear what at all. Previously, it was possible to climb buildings and, for example, throw an opponent down. It’s impossible to do something like that in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey today. Stealth in the series does not develop easily – it degrades from one part to another. All those incredibly cool movements disappeared in the game.
The game tries to be challenging, but it turns out, frankly, through the back seat. The enemies in the game are challenging, but not because they somehow cleverly move something in this spirit or each of them has a unique style of fighting, but because each of them has an incredible amount of health and unrealistically large damage to the character. Their movement is scripted. Therefore, the scenario of battles is always the same. Again, I repeat: the enemies have a crazy amount of HP and colossal damage. However, there is another problem. The game puts a difficult level barrier. If you have the fifth level, and the opponent has the eighth, you can never kill him. An opponent with a difference of one level is difficult. In two levels – incredibly difficult. Three levels is almost impossible. Four or more levels are beyond the pale. Such enemies can be endlessly beaten, beaten and beaten again, after which he vanshots and all these “dances with a tambourine” end. The game does not give any chance to kill someone who is higher than you level. The gameplay literally forces you to go through side quests so that you swing, earn a level and only then return back. It all looks very brazen.
Now about the good, namely about mass battles. They’re really cool. Other enemies can come to the aid of the enemy. And a whole orava can come. And all of them do not stand still. They don’t wait for you to kill someone. They attack everything at once. The most important thing is that mercenaries can join these enemies, and they are already incredibly strong guys. In addition, if an ordinary civilian is accidentally hurt during this fight, then he will join the battle. To all this mass carnage can join and all sorts of animals. Getting away with all this carnage is also not so easy, because the enemies will pursue: throw spears, arrows. The beauty of carnage is that you forget how clumsy and monotonous the combat system is, because the player doesn’t have time to think about it.
The pumping system has also changed dramatically. You will receive abilities that can be further shoved into certain slots. Abilities are subsequently used in combat. For example, you can smear poison on an axe, make some kind of super-blow. You can even acquire the ability that allows you to regenerate health. Or you can make an incredible Spartan kick. Depending on the situation, on the complexity and type of combat, it is necessary to combine different kinds of abilities. In short, pumping and combining abilities are interesting. As a result, the combat system in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey turned out to be playable, but saliva does not drip from delight, as, for example, it was in God of War (2018) and Spider-Man (2018). “Odyssey” horror as it needs interesting combinations, showiness, acrobatics and stylish movements.
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. Review
First of all, “Odyssey” makes you engage in the passage of additional tasks. Of course, they are made according to a quite classical scheme: bring, serve and kill. But from time to time it is periodically shrouded in quite interesting backgrounds and stories. For example, one character will need to bring butter to make him have a goat. Side quests in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey are quite interesting, although not all, but it is clear that the developers have worked fine on many. Be that as it may, but the developers will not give the opportunity not to appreciate their side quests.
Many story quests require a certain level. For example, your character has a tenth level, and a fifteenth level is required to complete. And given the fact that the difference of even two levels makes enemies almost unkillable, the difference of five levels will not allow you to advance on the task even a step. Therefore, you have to go to perform tasks. On the one hand, the tasks are cool, interesting and they are different, but on the other hand, what are the coercive conditions? Maybe I just want to go through the storyline? Why is it so important that the game is played for a long time? What will developers get out of this? Negative, negative review?
Basically, in the game you need to run from one specified point to another, capture fortresses, and on the way collect all sorts of different objects and things. From this you can then collect some weapons, improve equipment or strengthen your ship. In principle, this is all, because the global goal in the game is to pump the level of the character in order to pass the story campaign. Or more precisely, level up to get ACCESS to the story campaign. In terms of gameplay, the game really has room to grow.
In fact, Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey does not make you move your brains too much. The gameplay is built in such a way that it is necessary, like a taxi driver on the navigator, to travel from one point to another. Periodically you have to kill someone, collect something, open it and that’s all. The problem of the game is that the player is not set any interesting global goals, in the fulfillment of which he would have to move his convolutions. No challenging puzzles, no challenging tasks. Everything rests solely on the level of the character, enemies and things.
Graphics, visuals and environment
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. Buy
To the extent of the chosen setting, Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is beautiful. The way Odyssey looks is a true delight for the eyes. The game is amazing. The task of modeling the model of Ancient Greece Ubisoft was not just fulfilled, but overfulfilled: color palette, scale of locations, population, architecture. You can endlessly list how great the game looks. However, this is not at all surprising, because the Assassin’s Creed series has always been beautiful. In the series, every time a lot becomes mediocre and disgusting, but not its visual part and graphics. It progresses steadily from one part to another part. Each new assassin manages to cause even more visual delight than last time. Wildlife, nature – the graphics are simply amazing. And it’s incredible on the PlayStation 4, and what happens in 4K with ultra-settings on the PC is just not to be expressed in words.
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey is an unusual 3D encyclopedia of a certain period. The game of workshops conveys the greatness of ancient Greece: its character, sins and scale. Once again, it is worth recalling that the game is really insanely huge. Developers are well aware of the contribution they make to the gaming industry. They understand that games really can teach something. Therefore, on the game map there is a kind of guide to all the significant monuments of architecture, where you can get a brief description and this is also cool. A special role is played by the detailing of armor and weapons. All of them are beautiful, authentic and to some extent harsh.
Microtransactions, donation and things
Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. Release date
Immediately it is worth noting that the shortage of resources, money and clothing in the “Odyssey” has become less, so in this regard, the developers made a huge step after the release of “Origins”. Because in Assassin’s Creed: Origins, you really had to run most of the game as some limited character, because you had to count every shekel that was hard to get. There’s money in Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey.
The variety of really beautiful and stylish things is there. Things can be safely bought and safely pumped, because this process has been greatly simplified. More precisely, the system is not even lighter, but a little more real, because it does not have a ruthless donation system. And donat is still present. It is now called “Saving Time”, although who needs to save time in a completely single-player game, for which on consoles you have to pay 4,000 rubles? It’s not clear who all these people who need this feature are. However, the developers in this regard are also incomprehensible. Yes, of course, all for the sake of money, but the function and opportunity is absolutely disgusting. Some kind of insult to the feelings of those playing in synplayer games.
Donat really decides a lot in the game. Thanks to him, you can go through the game Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey much faster. And for money you can still buy the most beautiful things and the most stylish weapons. If many did not play Assassin’s Creed: Origins or forgot, they remind that “Origins” was a real casino where you could buy a special case from which things fell out (including duplicates of existing things). And lo and behold, Odyssey was spared the disgusting mechanics. In addition, if in “Origins” stylish and good things could be bought only for real money, then in “Odyssey” even if this is partially present, but the situation is clearly better. Therefore, you will not run around in disgusting rags, as it was in Assassin’s Creed: Origins. However, the very idea of a donation system in a single-player game is just awful. Okay, buy games in some online games where you can show how cool you are, but here’s who to settle for it?
And since we’ve touched on online to some extent, it’s clear why a game like Odyssey doesn’t have a network mode? At least the cooperative mode, which was in the same Assassin’s Creed: Unity. After all, in this way the game can raise the cost and prolong life to some extent. Given that “Odyssey” brags about its large-scale battles, the network mode would be excellent. And even with such pumping, the number of weapons and things.
Ubisoft should already understand that Assassin’s Creed is too popular and beloved by many. Therefore, they need not to stumble and not to make obvious mistakes when creating the next game in the series, which have been talked about for many years. However, it is also not so easy to do this, because, as a rule, we all want to see this game better and usually all the main needs are able to satisfy Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey. The game really has many disadvantages, but, nevertheless, it is addictive, which means that there is much more good in it. “Odyssey” is the largest Assassin’s Creed in the history of the franchise. The game stunningly conveys absolutely the entire story and the most interesting period of human history. Assassin’s Creed: Odyssey literally intoxicates with its scale, its immense beauty. Sometimes the game, it turns out, to interest the player in its history. Therefore, despite the large number of sins, you can be satisfied with it.
In general, “Odyssey” has enough disadvantages that a couple interfere with the passage. However, the number of pluses and innovations help to keep interest in the passage, but do not help to keep the appropriate atmosphere.
The visual style and graphics are delightful. It’s hard to find fault with something specific. Landscapes, architecture, nature and other surroundings – everything pleases the eyes. The game not only meets the established standards, but also raises the bar.
The main problem with the songs in the game is that they are all similar to what could already be heard in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Familiar notes are felt literally immediately. As for the sound effects and accompaniment – this is in complete order.Single player campaign
“Odyssey” has taken a huge step forward in terms of the storyline compared to last year’s “Origins”. There is a choice. There are dialogues. Interesting, historical figures. And in general, the plot is fascinating with twists, history and characters.
Control on PC and consoles is quite convenient. All icons are conveniently located. Nothing superfluous. The management has undergone minor changes, so it will be quite familiar to all those who played “Origins”.
Before the game, you should know that “Odyssey” is far from the Assassin’s Creed, to which everyone is accustomed. This is a completely new game. New mechanics. History. New opportunities and peace. Many fans will have to prepare for a drastic reboot.
