The era of universal goodwill could not come, the European dream was destroyed along with the European Union, and the US politicians now have a new dictatorship and a new prophet appeared in India, who began to lead millions.

The game Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth considers the second attempt to launch the legendary “Civilization” into outer space. Who does not remember – we remind you that the first launch took place back in 1999, the game was called Sid Meier’s Alpha Centauri. Well, 15 years later, the new part of the game inherited bright purple and pink colors, alien landscapes, and, of course, the story of how humanity polluted its planet, after which it sent the colonists to spoil on other planets. Otherwise, the new game has little in common with the old “Alpha Centauri” and even with the native “Civilization”.

The yard is already far from the 25th century, but the first settlers have to start living literally from scratch: they need to invent the Internet again, study the basic principles of cloning, and even learn to launch meteorological satellites into space again. In addition to the standard factions (of which there are only eight in the game), you will encounter local animals.

Between alien craters and poisonous pores, alien wolf-like monsters roam somewhere, various krakens and sea dragons move across the sea, and somewhere under radioactive lands giant radioactive worms dig tunnels that can devour an entire detachment of space infantry in one bite .

After their first contact with alien life, experienced players in “Civilization” immediately begin to experience some confusion. After all, before everything was very simple and even obvious – it is necessary to invent gunpowder as soon as possible, well, and build the Egyptian Pyramids in order to defeat the enemy, but here’s what to do now: do you need to drill xeno-wells or study seismic induction as soon as possible?

Instead of the technology tree familiar to everyone, a very strange “web” appears, and of course there is no more money – there is “energy”. A variety of satellites fly over your cities, which carry radioactive clouds, and they, in turn, spit chemicals on the heads of enemies. The standard unit, known to everyone as the “ranger” now, instead of running and exploring the area, after which, having died from a group of barbarians, begins to conduct incomprehensible excavations and find the hidden message of the Ancients. In general, a complete madhouse.

Sid Meier is truly a cult designer. Once again, he impresses everyone with his talent for simplifying huge and complex strategies without making them too deep and bombastic. In general, such developers are a rarity in our time.

Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth in a few minutes begins to explain the basics of the game literally on the fingers. Any civilization has the right to develop only in three directions: Righteousness, Superiority and Harmony. If you wholeheartedly treat the new planet, the natives and do not arrange a genocide for the worms living here for thousands of years, then after some three hundred years the descendants of the same colonists will be able to grow their own gills, after which they will tame local animals and roam the territories on alien wolfbugs, passing toxic miasma along the way.

You can go the other way – to go headlong into robotics. Equip your troops with blasters, create an army of powerful cyborgs, burn enemy nests to the ground, and send the Legion of Angels to your competitors – huge humanoid machines that are able to roam both on the ground and on the occasion, pass through existing craters without any problems and so on. Well, the last option is apparently an analogue of the Earthlings: go completely into philosophy and religion, build cultural attractions of the “Earth” in cities, comprehend terraforming, eventually drive all the alien infection into the reservation and make the New World look like a native Earth, where there will be bays , meadows, palm trees and oases.

In order not to get completely lost in this huge chain of technologies, the game will accurately show what you need to do next in order to move towards a particular goal. The “Civilopedia”, familiar to everyone, is now science fiction, in which everything from anti-gravity to firaxite will be explained to you, and space advisers will help you here.

And finally, the problems with the mess in the army were solved in Civilization: Beyond Earth. Now you do not need to spend all the accumulated gold on the next upgrade of units, because a couple had to re-equip the army at exorbitant prices so as not to be destroyed in an instant. Soldiers, artillery, tanks, ships, aircraft – absolutely all units now evolve for free as they develop.

If once your soldiers in spacesuits were offended by regular xenomorphs, then in just two moves they can already destroy entire hives of offenders. The Kraken, which sank five ships at a time, now simply runs with its tentacles tucked up in front of a powerful aircraft carrier.

But even in the new part, very standard things remained, without which not a single part of the game could do: trade, diplomacy, espionage, sabotage and alliances – all this works even in remote corners of space. But even here there are useful details. Now you can donate a couple of valuable resources, and in return demand services in return, but as abstract friendly units.

I think the meaning is clear, the more your friends owe you, the better it is. For example, if you delivered tons of xenomass to the same Franco-Iberia year after year, then at a crucial moment, when your space marines take some neutral People’s African Union, then the debtors will definitely say something in your favor, so as not to disgrace you and not stain your image.

Almost every game in Sid Meier’s Civilization: Beyond Earth will take you about ten hours. This time will be enough for you to realize where to lead your people further. You can devote your whole life to studying mysterious signals or searching for artifacts, or you can rebuild the Gates of Liberation and return to your homeland, in order to cross the Old World with the New, and then see what happens. You can study science and technology, after which again make incredible discoveries. Well, in the end, you can finish everything by the classical method: build up an army, after which you can sweep across the planet with a Blitzkrieg, enslaving faction after faction along the way.


Civilization – is a paradise for those who love global strategies. This game of global opportunities and even the most incredible incidents in history. The new part can be said to work on the same fundamental mechanisms and rules, although in fact it is a completely new kind of “Civilization”, where you will find many new discoveries. Civilization Beyond Earth is a fantastic story for those players who love really smart strategies these days.
